Who are we?

We are a group of people interested in mobility change, both small and revolutionary, boring and exciting. We wish to understand which changes are currently underway and why, trying to find answers in the present and in the past.

We founded DMM in November 2025 at a conference for mobility studies (see T2M.org), set up working groups to develop our scientific basis (how do we define ‘alternatives’? what themes matter most?), to think about setting up ‘panels’ (how big should they be? per country or per city?), and attract funding and sponsorship.

We set up a Secretariat, organize Council meetings (gathering the members of the project), and prepare an annual meeting for members and non-members during the annual T2M conference. Please fill out the membership form so we can keep you informed about our activities.

The Digital Alternative Mobility Monitor

The Digital Alternative Mobility Monitor (DMM) is an international collaborative platform that documents the global transition towards sustainable and socially equitable mobility.

The project was initiated by the Dutch mobility documentation centre NCAD and is currently being developed by an international network of scholars and mobility experts from Europe and North America.

DMM was created in response to a growing need:
while mobility transitions are increasingly discussed in politics, urban planning, and research, there are still few platforms that systematically document how these changes are experienced and implemented in everyday life.

DMM therefore focuses not only on quantitative mobility data, but also on narratives, practices, and experiences that illustrate how mobility cultures are changing over time.
